Omega-3 DHA vs Fructose
Fructose is a common ingredient in many of the foods and drinks in the western diet; sodas, cereals, fruit juices, desserts, sweetened coffee drinks, it’s everywhere! And did you know that fructose can alter the genes in our brains and may be linked to metabolic diseases such as cardiac disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, ADHD, and depression?
A recent study by UCLA has demonstrated that the omega-3 fatty acid DHA can reverse fructose-induced gene alterations. Our bodies aren’t good at making omega-3 fats so we need to add them to our diet. So help your brain out and add some DHA to your diet! Have a handful of walnuts for a snack, add wild salmon to your shopping list, throw some flax or chia seeds into that smoothie. And make an appointment with us to learn more about alternative ways to improve your mental health. Here’s to building a better brain!
