“The greatest mistake physicians make is that they attempt to cure the body, without attempting to cure the mind; yet the mind and body are all one and should not be treated separately.” ~ Plato

After medical school at the University of Massachusetts and residency training at Loma Linda University, I spent a year doing addiction research at Massachusetts General Hospital. I established Trinity Wellness Center in 2005 and believe it’s become one of southeastern North Carolina’s most innovative and leading-edge psychiatric and mental health clinics.
Neurofeedback, pharmacogenetic testing, ketamine for depression, hormone therapy, acupuncture and nutrition therapy are just some of the treatments and therapies we’ve introduced into our practice in recent years, as we continue to serve the many and different needs of patients.
I supervise 15 licensed clinicians across four different clinic sites. I have completed functional medicine training with functional medicine expert, best-selling author and Kresser Institute founder Chris Kresser, and currently serve on the Kresser Institute’s board of advisors. I am the medical director of the Leland-based Carolina Dunes geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit and serve as an expert medical reviewer for the North Carolina Medical Board.
I am passionate about continuing education and have studied a variety of healing methods, including acupuncture, yoga, meditation, nutrient therapy, neurofeedback and hormone therapy. I am a certified yoga teacher and exercise several times a week with a men’s, bootcamp-style fitness group called F3 Nation (Fitness, Faith and Fellowship).
Why come see me as a psychiatrist? Good question! Here’s my answer: If you want to find out what’s really wrong with your health, if you want to find out some root causes of your symptoms, if you want to continue to improve in life, and if you’re ready to make some real lifestyle changes, then I look forward to working with you! I believe in what I say, and I practice what I preach. I’m in the best health of my life, I enjoy my work and relationships, and I’ve found purpose. Let me help you do the same!

“Dr. Mathew is an excellent physician! I have been under his care for nearly a decade, and he has continued to work with me through thick and thin, when most doctors would have thrown in the towel. This is a rare quality in the practice of Psychiatry. He is willing and trained to work in a lot of evidence-based treatment modalities. He is a great doctor and a kind human being. If you’re reading this and looking for a doctor, he is highly recommended and I wish you all the best… Good Luck!”
“Dr. Mathew is a wonderful psychiatrist with not only the highest standards of treatment, but he is also totally patient oriented. He gives me the time that I need to talk about the issues that I have had since the last visit. One of the greatest things that this practice offers is a treatment called LENS. Electrodes are placed on the areas of my brain which are the sources of my psychiatric issues. The electrical impulses through my brain really do improve my symptoms.”
“Most people with a mental condition would probably agree that finding a doctor that really understands your psychological profile is a very difficult task. I’ve been a patient of Dr. Matthew for over 2 years now and he has helped me tremendously. His understanding of natural and preventative methodologies complement his scientific knowledge. I’ve felt comfortable with him since day one. If I have questions he usually responds in a timely manner. Without question the best doctor I’ve had.”
